NAMES Kate Kappel and Edouard Haba LIVE IN The “other” Washington (DC) OCCUPATIONS She works with nonprofits; he’s a freelance writer HOW THEY MET They were in Rome doing volunteer work with the Community of Sant’Egidio, helping out in the kitchen of a nursing home, when the cook ran out of celery and they were sent to the store to get some HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED On one of their favorite walks around the Capitol Hill area of DC, they paused at a fountain and Edouard surprised her NUMBER OF WEDDING GUESTS 60 FAVORITE DETAILS The ceremony was held at the family church that Kate grew up in; her grandmother has been a member since she was a young girl. Also, since Kate doesn’t live in the Northwest anymore, she wanted strawberry shortcake for dessert FIRST DANCE They each chose one song: His was “Que Dieu Protégé Notre Amour” (“May God Protect Our Love”) by Patrick Norman, which Edouard translated in her ear as they danced; hers was “At Last” by Etta James, sung by a friend MOST UNEXPECTED MOMENT She forgot to warn him about the tradition of tossing the garter …  FAVORS FOR GUESTS Donations to the DREAM Project, which provides healthcare and treatment to HIV-positive mothers in Africa WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY Hired a videographer to capture the action for their friends and Edouard’s family who couldn’t be there HONEYMOON Rented a beach house and convertible on Anna Maria Island in Florida
